Wild West... Suggestions?

Postby eddystone » Thu Jan 22, 2015 8:32 pm

Hi all,

Looking to head away in March for a few days to the west coast (mates 30th), I'm not after secret spots... Just wanting to know some info to get us started!

There will only be 4 of us, we have access to:

2 x 3.8m car toppers
1 x off-road camper trailer
1 x 7m boat with 150hp motor
1 x 4.5m poly craft
2 x 4wd

Wanting to do anything and everything from:

Diving - snorkeling / tanks
Line fishing for anything that is worth catching!

We can't take all of the above... Only taking two cars...

Any suggestions and or advice much appreciated!

Pat

Not too many places you could launch a 7m boat at so I would suggest Macquarie Heads with a few other options nearby for 4 WD and smaller craft in the right weather.
It should give you some diving options in the right weather. If too much wind then the Arthur River could provide some sheltered smaller craft waters ( EP, black backs and resident trout) with a number of shore based diving options if you take 4WDs. Leave a few for the rest of us though.
Cheers,
Brian

Hi Pat,

Brian's summary is pretty good, but will elaborate a little. In the far NW, the best camping area would be at Arthur River itself. From there you can obviously fish the river. Travel north a few minutes and you have BluffHill Point. There is no actual ramp here, but you can launch a small boat there no worries in the little bay right where you drive into. Out the front there it is reasonably sheltered from the prevailing sw swell and the diving is pretty good (although the west pt ab population may be down a little now!). Just look for good rises in the bottom and you might be surprised. Always the chance there of finding some very big salmon as well. The beaches to the north of here can provide some very good shark fishing at night time too. The beach south of the Arthur river heads is prime surf fishing as well.

To the south of the Arthur, you will find Couta Rocks. Once again, no actual ramp, but a good sheltered beach to launch from providing the swell is down to around 2m or so. Once again, the diving can be ok. South of here you have temma, but access there is very hard.

The only other option is really only at Montagu and Im sure you know enough about that place 8)
