Explorer track access in high water

Postby johnrs » Mon Oct 16, 2017 10:45 am

Hi Folks
Very sad to hear this site is closing.
Lots of information tucked away in the searchable posts.

Anyway I am hoping for some early season access to the Chudleigh Lakes
and wonder how to bypass Lake McKenzie at high water level.
Some years ago I read, probably here, that there is a path up the hill behind the spillway at Lake McKenzie
but have not been able find it.
Of course this is not the path to Blue Peaks which starts a few hundred meters further west.

Does this path still exist in any useable form?
Thanks
John

I've not heard of that track. The last time I was in that area, the hill behind the spillway was really overgrown. An alternative route into the Chudleigh lakes is the Higgs track. I haven't walked this track since the flooding of last year so I don't know what condition its in. From memory the Higgs track was pretty rough as it was and hard yakka up to the plateau.

Cheers, Jason.

Hi John, used the spillway track at the weekend actually. Its above the button grass plain where it meets the thicker scrub below the spillway.
Hard to find at first, bit of a roo run at the start. Definitely easier than bush bashing the shore. Comes out at the junction of Explorer Creek and the Fisher.
Knee deep crossings atm but you can't have everything.
Cheers
Mark.

Thanks Mark
How is the season going?
Could you post some detailed instructions regarding the start of the bypass track?

I have had a look several times now
and did the high water scrub bash with a large pack last visit.
Really keen not to repeat this experience.
Thanks
John
